  43. MICROSOFT WEB PUBLISHING WIZARD OVERVIEW

  46. Welcome to the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard version 1.0.
  47.  
  48. Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard enables users to easily post web pages 
  49. (files) to their World Wide Web or Intranet site. WPW  supports multiple 
  50. Webpost Service Providers such as CompuServe, Sprynet, AOL and GNN. 
  51. The default Webpost Service Provider DLL can post to some of the popular 
  52. type of Internet Servers, including the National Center for Supercomputing 
  53. Applications' (NCSA's) HTTPD, APACHE Web server and Microsoft's Internet 
  54. Information Server (IIS). The Web Publishing Wizard connects to the 
  55. Internet Service Provider (ISP), determines the protocol needed to copy 
  56. the files, and uploads the files to the appropriate directory on the 
  57. ISP computer.
  58.  
  59. Along with the Web Publishing Wizard, Microsoft released the Webpost SDK 
  60. included in the ActiveX SDK available on the Microsoft web site 
  61. http://www.microsoft.com/intdev . Several Authoring Tools vendors are 
  62. already implementing a one-button Publish to their applications using the 
  63. Webpost APIs.

  65. Microsoft is also working with a large number of ISPs to ensure that 
  66. posting using the Web Publishing Wizard and the Webpost APIs is 
  67. fully supported.

  70. WHERE TO FIND THE WEB PUBLISHING WIZARD ON THE MICROSOFT WEB SITE

  78. HOW TO START THE WEB PUBLISHING WIZARD
  79. ======================================

  81. There are 2 ways to invoke the Web Publishing Wizard:
  82.  
  83. - Click Start, point to Programs, then  Accessories, then Internet Tools 
  84.   and then click Web Publishing Wizard.
  85. - In the Windows Explorer window, select the file(s) or folder(s) you want 
  86.   to send, and then right-click on the desktop. Click Send To, and then 
  87.   click Web Publishing Wizard.

  89. CHECK LIST BEFORE USING WEB PUBLISHING WIZARD
  90. =============================================

  92. Before to use the Web Publishing Wizard, you need to check the following:
  93.  
  94. 1. Check whether you access the Internet  through a proxy server or an 
  95.    Internet Service Provider and setup your Web browser accordingly. 
  96.    If your browser can connect to the ISP then WPW will work. If you need 
  97.    help configuring your browser, contact your Internet (corporate 
  98.    environment)  or ISP's administrator. 
  99.  
  100. 2. If you are in a corporate environment Check with you Intranet 
  101.    administrator whether you have write access to the Corporate 
  102.    Web Server's directories.
  103.  
  104. 3. Install Dial-Up Networking (if it isn't installed already) and 
  105.    then create a connection icon to access your ISP.
  106.  
  107. 4. Check with your Internet Service Provider or On-line Service Provider 
  108.    if you need to use a Dial-Up Networking script to automate the 
  109.    connection to the Internet site.
  110.

  119. POSTING TO STANDARD INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS' WEB SITES

  122. The Web Publishing Wizard will post files or directories to any ISP's 
  123. Web servers running NCSA's HTTPD, APACHE Web Server or any other standard 
  124. Web servers installed with the default configuration and running the FTP 
  125. protocol.  If the ISP does not use the default standard configuration then 
  126. Microsoft requests that ISPs include a posting information file 
  127. (postinfo.html) on the Root URLs of their Web Servers.

  130. What if I don't know my Internet Service Provider's Web Server configuration?

  191. To use the Web Publishing Wizard to post your files through a proxy server, 
  192. note the following information:
  193.  
  194. . If your Web browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), make sure the 
  195.   proxy information is set correctly. To do this, right-click the 
  196.   Internet icon on the desktop, click Properties, click the Connection tab 
  197.   and then click Change proxy settings.

  199. . If you are not a Microsoft Internet Explorer user, then you have to 
  200.   edit the registry

  212. INFORMATION FOR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS.

  215. Because of variations among Internet servers, Microsoft requests that 
  216. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) include a posting information file 
  217. named postinfo.html on the root URLs of their Internet servers. 
  218. This file contains details about the posting protocol and policy. 
  219. The standard WebPost service provider uses the information in the file 
  220. to help with the detection of the WebPost protocol. 
  221.

  223. for a sample of the postinfo.html file that the default provider uses.

  238. ===========

  240. - Posting directory trees is NOT supported on AOL and GNN Web sites. 
  241. - Web Publishing Wizard version 1.0 for Windows NT 4.0 is not yet supported 
  242.   on non-Intel platforms such as PowerPC, MIPS, Alpha.
  243. - America On-Line and GNN do not support the Windows 95 or NT Dial-Up 
  244.   Networking feature. Access to AOL or GNN Web sites is done through 
  245.   America On-line or GNN software dialer. Before you use the Web publishing 
  246.   Wizard, please make sure you have installed AOL software version 2.5 
  247.   or above and GNN software version 1.30 or above. The software is available 
  248.   on the AOL and GNN Web sites which are respectively :
